Literacy, language, and cognitive skills were compared for 35 4th reading disabilities
(RD), 31 with late-identified RD (first seen after 3rd grade), and 95 normally
achieving students.
Late-identified reading deficits were heterogeneous;
some children were weak in both comprehension and word-level processing, whereas
others had deficiencies in 1 component of reading but were unimpaired in the other.
Information about past and current reading abilities and reading-related skills
and attitudes was obtained from individual assessments of the children and from
school records.
Tests of reading and spelling skills, measures of cognitive
and language abilities, and two brief questionnaires were individually administered
to each participant.

Primary grade teachers from across the United States
were surveyed about their instructional adaptations for weaker writers.
Students were pre- and posttested on problem-solving tests and responded to a
posttreatment questionnaire tapping self-regulation processes.
The results
are consistent with social agency theory, which posits that social cues in multimedia
messages can encourage learners to interpret human--computer interactions as more
similar to human-to-human conversation.
KCLs are operationalized as prior
learning that students bring to their current classroom experiences and include
school and nonschool experiences.
Introduction
To Proportional Reading http://www.proportionalreading.com/introduction.html
reading, students, loud, voice, proportional reading, speeds, silent,
pause, pronounce, comprehension, eye. Tool One: Text
is read out loud in either real human voice or in synthesized voice, at slow speaking
speed with each word shown on the screen, one word at a time, as it is read out
loud.
All ESL students and all adult beginners can benefit greatly as
well.
This feature greatly increases comprehension of serious reading.
This helps students focus on content rather than on mechanical process.
Proportional Reading solves all these problems by automatically giving all numbers
and dates and all marked titles and subtitles extra display time.
As one
reads Proportionally, one hears an inner voice talking (the visual simulation
of voice).

It comes at the level of the pattern recognition.
Interesting thing with
them is that the programers build libraries of good patterns, thus programs play
them successfully and therefore can beat beginners.
Books like "Graded
go problems for beginners" are ideal for this.
Spend a limited amount
of time on each problem, looking up the answer if you don't find it, and work
your way through the book a few times in succession.
When you solve a
problem by remembering the solution from last time, you may feel that you haven't
exactly improved your reading skills, but that's OK: the benefit from knowing
the pattern is bigger anyway.
A bit strict, perhaps, but by playing many
many games (mostly losing), I find that my reading abilities have improved.

Reading Enhancement Project continued to be very successful in its third year
of implementation. The overall purpose of the project was to help students become
more effective readers. It was comprised of two components:teaching reading strategies
to all students in grades 6-9 and a reading intervention program for students
in grades 4 and 5.
Our objective with this component was to provide a
structured reading program for Grade 6 to 9 students that focused on the development
of effective reading strategies. This has been accomplished by providing teachers
in the middle grades with resource binders containing lesson plans for teaching
reading strategies.

The aim of an IQ test is to measure the intelligence of a child, which supposedly
is an indication of the child's potential.
The subject of this discussion,
that learning is a skill, is apparently one of those ideas that are generally
regarded as self-evident.
In modern Western society mastery of basic academic
skills --- reading, writing and arithmetic --- is a necessary prerequisite for
success in both school and employment settings and society at large.
The
advantage of a good spelling ability in the work place was indicated by a survey
of 1500 employers and employees, recently conducted by Office Angels.
Effective for dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyspraxia, and other learning disorders.

Then participants practice
new skills for 6 weeks; return for a 2-day onsite session to share experiences,
revise learning plans, and set up a learning network; and attend a 1-day meeting
to determine next steps.
The objectives are: (1) improve communication
in State prevention systems; (2) share ideas for implementing comprehensive State
prevention systems; (3) identify needs and assess causes of ATOD problems in communities;
(4) develop action plans; and (5) work as teams, organizations, and systems at
the local, regional, State, and national levels.
