Skill development involves programs designed to help kindergarten through 12th
grade students build their academic skills so they become
more successful and independent at school.
STEP 1: Comprehensive Diagnostic Evaluation: Isolates strengths
and weaknesses, assesses current abilities, provides the
foundation for creation of each student's Individualized
Action Plan in Reading, Study Skills, Math, and/or Algebra.
Oral Reading / Comprehension- Is the student reading for
meaning or just reading words?
A Standardized Test- The purpose is to assess a student's
current grade equivalency and percentiles in vocabulary,
comprehension, and reference skills.
The action plan will focus on skill development, not tutoring.

Building Basic Reading Skills
skill, reading, basic skill, picture, child, parents, books, Fredericks,
parents play, letters, teachers. Parents play a very
important role in the beginning phases of reading instruction for their children.
Another function parents play in the early steps toward reading proficiency is
to provide many opportunities for children to read.
These reading skills
can be incorporated into activities giving the child a better basis for building
reading skills in school.
Listening skill - Children need to learn how
to listen to stories and develop an ability to interpret what is being heard.
Picture reading - This skill requires children to correctly determine information
from a picture.
A range of books from easy reading to challenging reading
levels will allow the child to pick up an easy book for enjoyment, but also allows
for children to experience a harder book for expanding their reading skills.
Acoustic modulation detection and phonological skill
- BDA 2001
skill, ability, phonological skill, sensitivity, non-word reading,
variance, constrain, detecting, acoustic modulation, adult, thresholds.
Phonological skills are necessary for literacy skill development, because they
determine the ability to use letter-to-sound correspondence rules to sound out
new words when reading.
Among other hypotheses, it has been suggested
that the development of phonological skills is constrained by basic auditory sensitivity.
Non-word reading ability (a measure of phonological decoding skill) was strongly
correlated with thresholds for detecting 2 Hz FM in a group of adult dyslexics
and controls, and also in unselected primary school children.
Sensitivity
to 2 Hz AM accounted for no additional variance.
Thus, combined sensitivity
to some, but not all, acoustic modulations is related to phonological skill, and
may be a constraining factor in its development.
Early Intervention for Students with Reading Problems
reading, reader, tutoring, students, instruction, skills, reading
competence, writing, visual-perception, sight words, intervention.
In order to explain the process used to help a student become a better reader,
it is necessary to give a brief explanation of what is actually involved in being
an effective reader.
In the latter case, significant improvements in reading
still occur, but require more intensive and long-term tutoring intervention.
2. Instructional Reading Level - Reading instruction is given in complete texts
at the reader's instructional reading level (90 - 95% word accuracy).
If reading speed is not within the average range for the reader's age level, some
strategies that may be used are repeated readings, increasing sight word knowledge,
improving decoding skills, increasing the volume of reading at easier levels,
and encouraging regular reading at home.
