Washington, DC -- Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to study brain activity in children, researchers today confirmed part of an eighty-year-old theory on the neurobiological basis of reading disability, and shed new light on brain regions that change as children become accomplished readers.

In 1925 Dr. Samuel Orton, a clinician and prominent dyslexia researcher, hypothesized that normally developing readers suppress the visual images reported by the right hemisphere of the brain because these images could potentially interfere with input from the left.

For the first time, they also were able to demonstrate that different phonological skills relate to activity in different parts of the brain when children read.

Why is reading so hard?

reading, students, learning, boys, reading problems, dyslexia, instruction, tutoring programs, girls, school, curriculum.
Some children learn to read with little or no organized reading instruction, others learn without difficulty in elementary school reading classes.

But for many students, learning to recognize words is tremendously difficult.

Decades of research in reading have shown that 15% of students have considerable difficulty learning to read.

The term dyslexia describes individuals who have a learning disability that makes it very difficult for them to break the code of word recognition and go from spoken language skill to reading skill.

Are reading problems more common in boys than girls?

No, although boys' reading problems are more often recognized by schools, girls have dyslexia and other reading problems with the same frequency as boys.

Reading Builder utilizes a research-based, balanced approach to literacy instruction as students practice and apply their phonemic knowledge to a wide variety of decodable texts and authentic literature, from comic strips to a chapter book.

Students' reading comprehension is then "tested" through fun mini-activities at the end of each text passage that encourage them to respond to literature, relate reading to their own experiences, make predictions, and read for a purpose.
