Reading - The Most Important Skill

reading, child, writing, parents, learning, librarian, magazines, school, attitudes, skills, grade.

A child who struggles with reading will usually have trouble in all other subjects.

Likewise, the child who reads well will most likely be able to do well in other areas.

Reading ability is the key to success in school and in learning.

Children whose parents themselves read at home and spend time reading for pleasure (not homework) with their children are more likely to themselves love reading and become good at it.

Magazines - Often children can get valuable practice reading children's magazines.

Below are recommendations on what parents can do to help their children develop strong reading and writing abilities.

McGuinness reviews the most up-to-date research on dyslexia, phonological awareness, the practice in most schools, and other vital subjects to provide parents and teachers with accurate, useful information about how to help learners learn to read.

Goodman describes opposition to WL as "part of an orchestrated campaign by the far right, and some of these academics have wandered into this without realizing who they're getting into bed with," as if the world renowned linguists who signed the Massachusetts protest letter didn't have the capability to make up their own minds.

Because you can read effortlessly, it is easy to forget that reading is a skill that is made possible by several sub-skills, or components, working together.

A picture of a reader's abilities on the component skills is called a "reading profile."

We can also use bar graphs to present the same reading profile.

On this website, we present profiles as tables and line graphs (except Oral Reading Rate, which we will always show as a bar graph).

Once a teacher has assessed a learner's reading skills, he or she can then direct instruction to those skills that need strengthening.

Learners with similar strengths and needs can be grouped for more focused instruction.

We recently were visited by Reading MP Jane Griffiths, who came and saw a group of students at Highdown School.

Portfolio assessment is an innovative form of alternative assessment that allows teachers to see the academic progress and accomplishments made by a student over time.

Portfolios also provide students with the opportunity to reflect on what they have learned over the course of a semester or a year.

A typical school-to-work program includes school-based learning, work-based learning, and connecting activities in middle and high school.

This week, we look at a variety of ways of promoting school-to-work activities in your classroom.

This article, the first in a two-part series on Performance Assessment, takes an in-depth look at what performance assessment actually is, and what performance activities allow teachers to observe.

A SIMPLIFIED SPEED READING COURSE FOR 8 TO 12 YEAR OLD KIDS, by George Stancliffe

kids, speed reading, child, instructions, adults, teaching, books, natural vision, Exercise, skill, recall.
I have since come to realize that most 8 to 12 year old children are natural speed readers, if they are given the chance to learn the skill properly.

Explain to the children how to look at a page of print with their NATURAL VISION.

EXERCISE 2: Have the kids go through at least 15 pages of material in 30 seconds, again.

Speed reading is a right-brained activity, while "slow reading" is a left-brained activity.

TEACH THE KIDS FIRST, then teach yourself, if you wish to do so.

In my experience, the older kids and adults must put more effort into it in order to get similar results, and you would probably benefit from getting a copy of SPEED READING 4 KIDS to help you out.

Publishes Monday--Wednesday, March 29--31, 2004 This supplement is designed to emphasize the concept of sacrifice that was experienced by all Americans at a level that has never been felt since the period during World War II. Students will explore the homefront situation: rationing, women in the war effort and victory gardens.

Opportunities for map reading, table reading, determining main idea, details and inference while reading, and reading editorials for opinion and bias are provided.

Reading Across the Curriculum

Without it our students cannot function efficiently and successfully in the world, not to mention on those oh-so-important standardized tests.

However, it seems that the main bulk of reading instruction and practice fall on the Language Arts instructors.

Imagine how much better our students would be in the area of reading if we ALL, no matter what subject we teach, took some time to reinforce important reading skills every day.

Now I realize that many of you may be feeling a bit nervous at the prospect of taking on additional responsibilities, especially when they wander into the unknown territory of reading and/or writing.

For example, a Science teacher may have a lesson on electricity.

Early Reading First, part of the President's "Good Start, Grow Smart" initiative, is designed to transform existing early education programs into centers of excellence that provide high-quality, early education to young children, especially those from low-income families.

The overall purpose of the Early Reading First Program is to prepare young children to enter kindergarten with the necessary language, cognitive, and early reading skills to prevent reading difficulties and ensure school success.

Early Reading First is a bold initiative to create early childhood centers of excellence that prepare young children to enter kindergarten with the necessary language, cognitive, and early reading skills for learning success.

Based on the understanding that literacy is a learned skill, not a biological awakening, the initiative promotes coherent, skill-based instruction in the years before kindergarten.
