LWR is a basic reading and writing series developed primarily for adults with little or no reading ability.

The series provides a systematic development of basic reading and writing skills.

The lessons progress from the sounds and regular spellings of basic consonants to those of the short vowels, the long vowels, and finally to irregular spellings and more difficult reading, writing, and grammar skills.

A separate series of manuals, the Laubach Way to English, provides complete instructions for teaching the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing English to the non-English-speaking student.

Beginning on a zero level, Skill Book 1 lays an essential foundation in word attack and comprehension skills.

As a mother and former public school teacher and librarian, I believe we all have a duty to help our children achieve success.

Laura Bush understands the responsibility that parents and other adults have to help children develop strong cognitive skills in the early years so that they are prepared for school.

As a former public school teacher, Mrs. Bush also knows that the quality of a child's education hinges on the quality of that child's teachers.

Teaching reading is one of America's top domestic priorities.

Practical Readings 1, an English reading textbook for beginners in both ESL and EFL settings aims to develop students' top-down and bottom-up reading skills using a wide variety of prose and non-prose texts.

The Word and Beyond the Word sections are designed to raise students' vocabulary and grammar awareness.

In both sections, exercises are presented within the context of each unit's topic to facilitate students' reading comprehension.

A second drawback is that most of the materials contained in the text, such as newspaper articles, advertisements, and pictures, are revised or recreated and so lack authenticity.

For EFL students who don't have many chances to be exposed to a target culture and language, presenting real materials is more desirable.

The DC Reads program was first implemented during the 1997-1998 school year (Year 1) as a partnership between the Corporation for National Service, the District of Columbia Public Schools, Communities in Schools (a non-profit organization) and six local universities (American, Catholic, George Washington, Howard, and Trinity), with Georgetown University acting as lead.

Most tutored students were in second grade and were identified by school staff as having low reading skills and being most in need of tutoring.

At the beginning of the 1998-1999 school year, most schools used the Book Partners curriculum while a few schools used the Reading One-to-One curriculum.

Educators Grabe and Stoller (2002) assert, "As we enter a new century, productive and educated citizens will require even stronger literacy abilities (including both reading and writing) in increasingly larger numbers of societal settings" (p. 1).

Little research on reading involves adults learning English as a second (or additional) language.

In a review of the research published from 1980-2000 on reading development among adult English language learners in the United States (aged 16 years and older), Adams and Burt (2002) found only 47 studies that addressed this category of learners.

That's the number of books in Challenger Elementary School's collection, and a monstrous task has been undertaken to determine what reading levels are required for students to read those books.

Once the program is completed, students will be able to determine what skill level is needed to read each book.

Kalsnes stated that most of the school's first graders are at the beginning readers level, which is why those students have not been included.

For the project, Kalsnes and others type the title of each book onto the Lexile Framework? for Reading Web site (www.lexile.com).

If a teacher decides that a student's reading skills have gotten better, the student will be able to check out materials in the next skill level.
