Just as a child develops language skills long before being able to speak, the child also develops literacy skills long before being able to read.

When parents talk, sing, and read to their child, links among the child's brain cells are strengthened and new cells and links are formed.

Reading aloud to young children is so critical that the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that doctors prescribe reading activities along with other advice given to parents at regular check-ups.

When children are plugged into television instead of reading books, they are not developing key literacy skills that will prepare them for school and help them learn.

The Reading Tree

reading, intervention, parents, reading skill, child, learning, grade, instruction, reading skill development, at-risk, alphabet.
With regard to the nature of reading skill development, there are important things that parents may wish to consider in the interest of time and expense.

The timing of intervention and degree to which children are provided with explicit instruction in phonological, orthographic, and morphological awareness, the alphabet principle, fluency, and comprehension influence how well and how quickly students will overcome their "at-risk" reading status.

Research indicates there is a critical developmental window for reading skill development, and the earlier a child receives systematic intervention, the more likely the child will become a proficient reader.

Many parents are aware of their child's at-risk status before first grade, because of extreme difficulty learning to recognize and write the alphabet letters and learning the sounds that go with them.

"We have these flashcards," explained his mom Janine, and "he just out of the blue pulled them out, and he started saying some of the words ? It was amazing."

While lots of children are fascinated by cars, Kyler focused on the lettering, pointing out car names and license plate details.

Their dazzling ability to read is in fact a rare syndrome called hyperlexia, which means excessive reading.

Margie, another mother of a hyperlexic child named Alex, remembers when her pride turned to concern.

Kupperman has found that the reading skill in itself can be an essential pathway into the minds of hyperlexic kids.

reading, skills, stimulus, sensitivity, ability, auditory, literacy skills, threshold, sensory, modulation, Psychology.
The relationship between sensory sensitivity and reading performance was examined to test the hypothesis that the orthographic and phonological skills engaged in visual word recognition are constrained by the ability to detect dynamic visual and auditory events.

Learning to read a language depends on acquiring an understanding of both its spoken properties (phonology) and its written form (orthography).

Children's performance on the orthographic word-pseudohomophone discrimination task was the strongest statistical predictor of their literacy skills, as measured by single-word reading and spelling.

It alone could explain over 78% of the variance in reading skill and over 63% of the variance in spelling ability (see Table 2).

No skill is more critical to the future of a child, or to the future of a democratic and prosperous society, than literacy.

Reading by 9 is a multi-year campaign aimed at helping kindergarten through third-grade students read at grade level by the age of nine.

Working with parents, educators, business and civic leaders and community organizations, The Times is serving as a catalyst to focus public attention on the crisis of child illiteracy.

In addition, The Times is using its leadership and influence to promote public-private partnerships to improve children's reading skills.

Southern California students rank among the lowest in the nation in reading skills.

By the end of the first grade, we begin to notice substantial decreases in the children's self-esteem, self-concept, and motivation to learn to read if they have not been able to master reading skills and keep up with their age-mates.

Every type of writing system whether it be a syllabic system as used by the Japanese, a morphosyllabic system as used by the Chinese (where a written symbol represents a unit of meaning), or an alphabetic system that is used in English, Spanish, and Scandinavian languages (to name a few) present challenges to the beginning reader.

Children who comprehend well, seem to be able to activate their relevant background knowledge when reading - that is, they can relate what is on the page to what they already know.
