For example, research shows that the elasticity children's income with respect to parents' income is .40 or higher in the U.S (Chadwick and Solon 2002, Solon 1999).

This kind of role modeling is likely to produce behavior-specific associations as children mimic particular behaviors of parents.

IV. Does Parental SES Affect Adolescent Characteristics?

Next we estimate model 3 above to see the extent to which family income and mothers' education affect daughters' adolescent characteristics.

NLSY children up to about age 15 in 1999 share many demographic characteristics of their broader set of age mates, although none were born to mothers older than 26.

The Hope Connection: Programs for Parents

parents, child, behaviors, principles, practice, responses, skill, regulation, connection, literature, environment.
We have trained a wide variety of target audiences in the application of these tools, including students, parents, and professionals (see Overview: Calendar).

The Parenting Tools are a set of strategies, skills, and scripts, which are founded on principles from developmental and clinical psychology.

They draw heavily on evolutionary and biological dynamics, which demand consideration in any bid to gain the attention and trust of a child with a history of early maltreatment.

By employing principles such as Levels of Response, IDEAL Response and Escalating Discipline, parents learn to administer efficient, effective discipline which in turn creates for their child an environment which is reliable and safe.

Conceptually, practicing has an important place in theories about the acquisition of skills and new behaviors (see, for example, several of the chapters in Anderson, 1981).

Stopping School Violence: 12 Things Parents Can Do

violence, parents, school, behaviors, skills, communication, firearms, child, kids, Disciplining, supervision.
Help stop school violence with this starter list of ideas.

Recognize that keeping firearms in your home may put you at legal risk as well as expose you and your family to physical risk.

In many states, parents can be held liable for their children's actions, including inappropriate use of firearms.

This kind of communication should be a daily habit, not a reaction to crisis.

Take advantage of "teachable moments" to help your child understand and apply these and other skills.

These behaviors often escalate into fistfights (or worse).

Talk with each other about violence problems, concerns about youth in the community, sources of help to strengthen and sharpen parenting skills, and similar issues.

They are skill and knowledge tools that come from participating in "Strengthening Families: For Parents and Youth 10-14," an Iowa State University Extension research-based curriculum being offered in communities and funded by legislative dollars through the Governor's Alliance on Substance Abuse and the Department of Education.

"I feel like I've improved how I handle things when I'm under stress, and I know what my family's values are now," said a youth participant from Anamosa.

Ninety-eight Iowa communities are receiving grant dollars to implement "Strengthening Families: For Parents and Youth 10-14" as a response to the Legislature's growing concern about an Iowa drug problem.

"We had recognized a need in our school district for better parenting skills," said Mark Casper, L & M School guidance counselor.

Transportation is available for students, who come to school two days a week for approximately four hours.

On one of the two days, parents are required to come to the classroom for 45 minutes and be an active part of their child's education.

The Callanans were videotaped with Bledsoe discussing some of their household issues, focusing on things to work on as a parenting team, and setting some goals.
