The School Readiness Project was developed as a joint project of the UW-Extension and the School of Human Ecology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

This study evaluated the school performance of school- age children and teens, comparing those who had suffered physical abused and those who had experienced neglect.

This article describes an empirically validated assessment and training model designed to improve the parenting skills of parents with intellectual disabilities.

The parent education approach is based on helping these parents to gain parenting skills.

This publication includes a case study, information on assessment and intervention, staff qualifications, planning, skills and instructional methods.

Evaluations found that in-home, skill-focused parent training can reduce the risk of child neglect.

In the mid 1990's, through planning efforts conducted by the Polk County Decategorization Project, parent skill development and training was identified as an area where better coordination could result in better service delivery to the community.

In meeting with service providers who offer parent skill development and parent education, it was determined that a wide range of opportunities existed for parents within Polk County, but what did NOT exist was...

Based on these findings, with a grant from DCAT and Family Preservation and Support Services, a RFP process began for the Parent Education/Training Coordination Project.

Because of the two committees, and the fact that so many agencies have been involved over the past 3 years, collaboration at times has been cumbersome and difficult.

American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse: The association of personality characteristics with parenting problems among alcoholic couples

This essentially represents a concentration in one system of the problems in living which are known to be associated with alcoholism, and has great implications for therapeutic work with the family or couple.

For example, alcoholism is associated with personality and character problems as well as parenting difficulties.

Moreover, both personality and parenting problems have long been known to be highly associated with cognitive, affective, behavioral, and substance abuse problems among children and adolescents (Bohmstedt & Fisher, 1986; Coombs & Landsuerk, 1988; Deren, 1986; Johnson & Pandina, 1991; Slice & Barrera, 1995).

It has also been suggested that clients with certain personality types such as borderline personality disorder have significant parenting deficiencies; for example, they tend to be less caring and more controlling than others (Zweig-Frank & Paris, 1991).

8. Develop your own qualities The quickest way is to possess many of these qualities yourself, for your child will become a 'mirror-image' of you, whether you like it or not.

Should you feel you do not possess such qualities, then think carefully and well, where you may have lost the opportunity to develop a particular talent or skill and consciously work to provide the opportunity for your child to become a stronger, more talented, more confident person than you.

Should you possess the ' missing quality or skill', then think out what helped you develop it - and plan a similiar programme with you and your child.

Florence School District One began its extended-day Title I kindergarten program in 1973.

The program serves 240 students a year in four elementary schools with Title I schoolwide projects; students whose scores on a skills checklist indicate a need for additional work on reading receive first priority in enrollment.

Kindergarten teachers coordinate with first grade Reading Recovery teachers to help guide curriculum and instruction at the kindergarten level.

Two parent coordinators, funded by Title I, involve parents in the extended-day program.

The program now uses a locally developed skills card that sets the same objectives for all kindergartners, regardless of their standing as Title I or non-Title I students.

Child maltreatment includes fatal and non-fatal physical abuse, neglect (physical, educational, emotional, and/or medical), sexual abuse, emotional abuse (psychological and verbal abuse or mental injury), abandonment, exploitation, and/or threats to harm the child.

CDC has funded five state health departments (CA, MN, MI, MO, and RI) to implement three-year cooperative agreements to examine the feasibility of collecting mortality and morbidity data for child maltreatment.

Study authors found that the first week of life was the period of highest risk and that the vast majority of homicides during this week occurred on the day of birth.

CDC has funded the University of South Carolina to implement and evaluate a multi-level parenting program to prevent child maltreatment by improving positive parenting skills.

ABSTRACT The Raising Responsible Teens Teaching Module Package has been developed in response to feedback about the highly successful "Raising Responsible Teens" parenting education series developed collaboratively by the University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics and University of Wisconsin-Extension, Cooperative Extension, 4-H Youth Development.

The Teaching Resources Package has been created in response to requests for a single comprehensive programming tool with multiple components which can be used to develop or supplement programs intended to provide parents of teenagers with information about adolescent developmental issues; teenage sexuality; and alcohol and other drug abuse, as well as strategies for developing positive communication, problem solving, and family management skills.

Materials provide for planning many sessions, however, video and discussion are the basis of the programs.

Immediate objectives assist in the assessment of less intense learning outcomes such as skill development and knowledge enhancement.

Long-term follow-up may occur two months to two years later via mail-out surveys or telephone interviews to measure the long-term effects of the skill, knowledge or behavioral change.
