It is designed for children 6 to 12 years old who are making
the transition to adolescence and who come from families
with problems in family functioning, parent-child conflicts,
or cultural conflicts between children and parents.
It includes both didactic lessons and participatory activities
that help parents master effective family management skills
and planned family discussions in which the therapist/facilitator
intervenes to correct dysfunctional interactions between
or among family members.
FET grew out of a long-standing tradition of work with Hispanic/Latino
immigrant families at the Spanish Family Guidance Center
in the University of Miami Center for Family Studies.
The theory behind this early work was that increasing parents'
familiarity with American culture and the values and attitudes
to which their children were acculturating, and increasing
children's familiarity with their parents' Hispanic/Latino
culture, would help to close the family cultural gap, improve
family relationships, and prevent problem adolescent behavior.

A seven-week program to improve communication skills and "vigilant"
parenting among rural black families made younger family members think more negatively
of alcohol use and early sexual activity, according to a new report in the journal
Child Development.
The study followed changes in parenting skills and
children's attitudes toward drinking and sex over a seven-month period among 322
rural Georgia families with an 11-year-old child.
About half of the families
enrolled in the study participated in seven sessions to boost specific parenting
skills and to offer strategies that discourage early alcohol use and sex.
Alcohol and drug use and early sexual activity have been "increasing more
rapidly among rural than urban African American youths," Brody says.

Answer: You express yourself, your values, your beliefs, the factors that are
the most important to you, in everything that you do.
You need to know
what is important to you in each parenting situation.
Then, you need to
know how to translate that knowledge into appropriate parenting actions everyday.
You can make the best decisions and take the best actions for you and your children
by basing them on your values, on your beliefs, on your parenting style, on your
relationship with your children, on your needs, on your children's needs, and
on what you feel is most important in any given situation.
Answer: I have
developed many different products and services so you'll be able to begin wherever
you feel most comfortable.

I see my job as catching a vision of my daughters'

the love of God, the wisdom of divine Mind, the honesty and reliability of Truth.
These lessons became a lifeline for me when one of my daughters was suspended
from high school - the same school I worked for.
