They are using the Bavolek AAPI for a pre and posttest of parenting knowledge,
and parts of the Bavolek curriculum in instruction.
They are looking for
a simple observational instrument which will assess the parent's ability to demonstrate
skills addressed in the Bavolek curriculum, such as responsiveness ans provision
of age appropriate stimulation.
I have suggested the HOME or a vriation
on the DPICA (Eyeberg & Robinson), but they want something much simpler, like
a checklist of skills.
They are not concerned at this point about whether
the mothers truly integrate new skills into their daily lives -- only whether
the mothers can demonstrate them to the observers.

4 WAYS ATTACHMENT PARENTING CAN REDUCE THE RISK OF SIDS
http://www.askdrsears.com/html/10/T131000.asp
infants, physiology, attachment parenting, mothers, SIDS, babies,
baby, risk, hormones, growth, cortisol. The most plausible
explanation for SIDS, in most babies, is a defect in cardiorespiratory control
and arousability during sleep.
Also, research suggests that some infants
at risk for SIDS have less-organized physiological control mechanisms.
So, any parenting style that can enhance the development of a baby's physiological
control systems and increase mother's awareness to subtle changes in her baby's
physiology, would lower the risk of SIDS.
Findings of higher heartrates
and less adaptable heartrate variability in babies at risk for SIDS suggests these
infants are less able to adjust their physiology to changing biological conditions.
The longer infant animals were separated from their mothers, the higher the cortisol
levels, suggesting that these babies could be chronically stressed.

Good communication is an important parenting skill.
Parenting can be more
enjoyable when positive parent - child relationship is established.
Let
the child know that you are interested and involved and that you will help when
needed.
If you are very tired, you will have to make an extra effort to
be an active listener.
Be as courteous to your child as you would be to
your best friend.
For more information on how to improve your communication
with children we recommend the following materials which are available in the
CDI Store: Building Your Child's Self-Esteem, Kid Cooperation and When Anger Hurts.
If a child lives with criticism, he learns to condemn.

Latino parents and families, living in rural America face unique issues related
to acculturation, language barriers, isolation and fewer support systems.
Understanding that greater community based support systems would have a positive
impact on these families; the purpose of the current study is to examine Latinos'
satisfaction with parenting self-help groups in rural communities and their effect
on family relations, communication, and methods of discipline.
Taken together
these responses suggest that many of the Latino group members in the current study
relied on PHP groups for information and support regarding parenting and were
not currently seeking support from many other formal sources in their local communities.
