Judging from the ratio between the two topics on public TV, cooking beats parenting hands down.

Among the obstacles are finding a time slot that's convenient for both ultra-busy parents and ratings-conscious programmers, generating significant publicity for a show that's unlikely to be a blockbuster, and addressing the needs of an extraordinarily diverse audience--individuals with an intense need to understand the latest perplexing development in the lives of their own kids.

Cutting-edge technology and complicated delivery systems aside, it's this trust factor that keeps PTV producers intrigued by the topic, and that may carry the new parenting programs through in the end.

This is evident as the Syracuse City School District strives to address the significant increase in suspensions, behavior referrals and decreases in academic achievement among students.

The proposed Syracuse Safe Schools Healthy Students Initiative is based upon six months of work on the part of the Comprehensive Mental Health Steering (CMHS) Committee and recommendations from the Mayor's Commission on Juvenile Violence and the District's Alternative Education Committee.

There will be statistically significant (p<.05) improvement in attitudes and subsequent behaviors as reported on student self-report, anonymous surveys on the following: drug use, violent attitudes and behaviors, and other risk behaviors.

At least 50% of parents and teachers will report improved relations with police.

"The parents that need parenting information won't come!"

Other materials address parental skill building teaching techniques to restore "order" to family life or to use effective discipline strategies.

However, all parents do not have the same needs, nor experience the same problems with child rearing.

There is a great deal to consider when designing and evaluating parent education programs.

A first step to understanding may be to examine local demographics, such as child abuse rates, school drop-out rates, or other factors that put children or families at risk of not succeeding in school or society.

Parents who are not able to read with children nor communicate with teachers, merchants, and health professionals are severely limited in their involvement in schools and community.

Secondly, issues related to children's school success were discussed as problematic.

Included are topics of timetable, new activities, reminders of whatever sort, and some article of information pertinent to our school parents and their children.

Older kids feel they have all the answers.

Teaching the sign of the Cross, teaching how to receive Holy Communion, teaching how to say the Rosary, how to go to the store, how to make a left hand turn.

Practice makes perfect, we learned, and we need to give example to our older children.

Prompt your children with reminders to use what they have learned.

Preview new situations in which your children may need to increase a skill.

Lawlink NSW: B33 - Child Neglect: Its Causes and Its Role in Delinquency

neglectful, parents, child, adolescents, delinquency, control, support, maltreatment, risk, boys, families.
The more interest a parent shows in a child, the more a parent gets involved with a child, the more a parent supervises a child, and the more warmth and affection a parent shows a child, the less likely the child is to become involved in delinquency.

In the third part, findings from recent research studies which have examined risk factors for neglectful parenting and child neglect are reviewed.

They found that parental support (i.e. behaviours toward adolescents that indicate they are valued, accepted, and loved) and parental monitoring (i.e. children informing parents of their whereabouts, and parents knowing of the whereabouts of their children) were important predictors of adolescent drug-taking behaviour, deviance (e.g. arguing with parents, assaulting others, running away from home) and school misconduct.

Curriculum Planning for Parents and Children focuses on the importance of nurturing family members' full development throughout life and the actions involved in parenting.

It supports our New Wisconsin Promise, which seeks to ensure a quality education for every child by helping students become active citizens by better understanding their roles in family, society, and the world of work.

The guide can help teachers by providing an approach to curriculum that challenges students to see the larger ramifications of their everyday choices and actions.

Students discuss and practice parenting skills in conjunction with an academically rigorous exploration of issues related to child and life-span development.
