About co-parent project 2: learn effective-communication skills

http://sfhelp.org/pop/p02.htm

Paradoxically, we depend on communication more than any other learned skill to maintain our comfort and relationships, yet few of us ever study how to do that effectively.

Unseen psychological wounds and ineffective communication are key causes of the tragic U.S. divorce epidemic; low-nurturance parenting; and most personal, family, and social problems.

Project 2 aims to raise co-parents' ability to fill daily needs by helping each other (a) learn key basics and seven communication skills, and (b) teach them to their kids and interested others.

Success with this over time depends directly on significant adult progress with Project 1 - healing widespread psychological wounds from low-nurturance childhoods.

Satisfactions is the guidebook for Project 2.

Of course there are no guarantees about what grown children will do given any particular parenting approach.

But, if you make the effort, you can evoke compassion in your children and increase the likelihood they will be kind and contributing adults.

As infants become toddlers, however, it's important they observe parents modeling the kind of behavior they are to emulate.

"Kids see our every move," Genovese says.

They can discuss kids who are overweight, boys who are thin and slight, children who are of a different race or social clique or any other "difference" kids see.

It also teaches them it feels good to help other people."

And when families volunteer together, the spirit is contagious.

The proviso directed the Department of Social and Health Services to "develop and implement comprehensive programs for alcohol and drug abusing women and their young children.

This includes early identification of pregnant and parenting substance abusers, improved access to and coordination of health care and chemical dependency treatment, and family oriented early intervention services for women and their children.

Safe Babies Safe Moms attempts to improve long-term outcomes for these families and represents an investment in their future, while assisting them in making major life changes.

These counties demonstrated the treatment need for this population of substance abusing women to support such a project, as well as lacked the necessary resources to support these women on a comprehensive level.

Introduction The Skill of Concentration How Long Can You Concentrate For?

How can we help our children learn concentration as the important skill that it is, rather than something that happens only when they are engrossed in play, computer games or worse, TV?

Once your child understands the concept of concentration, you can engage him in games to help him value and improve his gift of concentration.

Put the object on the table between the players - just two of you to start with, although you can have more players once your child gets familiar with the game.

Resiliency is a fairly new concept which has emerged only in the past few decades.

Consequently, few preventive intervention programs specifically address resiliency.

The predominance of programs fostering resiliency are school-based initiatives intended to build life skills which would foster the successful adaptation of individuals.

These programs have been shown to have positive effects on such things as parental self-confidence and family functioning (Westin, 1981; Clarke-Stewart, 1977).

However, traditional parent education programs have been limited in that they have focused on parents with children at home, reached a limited group of parents, and required subscription by parents to an externally determined and expert-led agenda of skill-building exercises.

The Building Strong Families and Adolescents (BSFA) Program, is a parent education program developed by Michigan State University.

Tuscola County MSU Extension currently has 4 trained parenting instructors that work with primary limited resource low income parents with children 0-16 years of age.

Too many low income and limited resource parents in Tuscola County do not demonstrate proactive parenting and nurturing behaviors or discipline techniques and do not make good decisions in regards to the health and safety issues that concern their children.

Last year, the BSFA program reached over 120 families and the majority of these were done through home visits.
