These pages for professionals describe a five-part model for providing effective
clinical service to five types of clients.
Here, an intervention is any
intentional or reflexive behavior by a clinician (counselor or therapist) that
causes significant change in the client family system.
This is the first
of a series of Web articles that propose effective clinical interventions to reduce
core stressors in these five client-types, based on this general assessment framework.
Another symptom of this protective Guardian subself is a client smiling and joking
as s/he describes a trauma, loss, shame, or fear.
As client discomfort
mounts, specially with direct eye contact, these respectful interventions may
promote a guarded client to own and demonstrate their current feelings, thoughts,
and surface needs.

I leave, he starts to cry and his teacher said he won't eat, doesn't really play.
Bothersome Biting Shuntay in Houston My son is biting other kids in daycare.
I know it's normal for children his age and that it's just a stage he's going
through, but what is the best solution to this common problem?

Lengths of stay vary depending on the goals established
with and for the young woman and her child.
Combining the shelter services
for her and her child with parenting skill development, life skill development,
encouragement of continuing education, access to mental health counseling through
Park Center, Inc., and ready access to child care, allows the young parent many
opportunities that might not have been had if struggling on her own with pregnancy
or parenting.
Our ongoing mission of preventing child abuse and neglect
is therefore strengthened with such a program, providing part of the next generation
of parents an opportunity to learn about community resources and how to keep their
children safe.

The project began in 1986 when a family court judge in Tompkins County requested
a parenting skills training for parents appearing before her in cases of child
abuse and neglect.
In 1988, after linking with an educator from Cornell
Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County, the program developers acquired funding
from the Tompkins County Department of Social Services and the Tompkins County
Youth Bureau for Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County to coordinate
and expand the Parenting Skills Workshop Series.
Some become facilitators
in the Tompkins County program where funding is provided by the Department of
Social Services for six to eight parenting workshops annually.

child, communication, pre-teens, listening, parents, age, saying,
emotions, feeling, BBC, failure. You achieve this by
listening properly and not leaping in with your own judgements or constantly blaming
your child.
In many ways, it's much easier to communicate once your child
has reached adolescence, as her understanding has greatly increased and she can
be surprisingly sophisticated in her thinking.
It's also becoming impossible
to use the controlling methods that may have worked when she was younger so effective
communication is essential to gain her cooperation.
It's not just about
you telling your child something or giving advice, but rather listening to her
viewpoint and accepting her emotions.
If pre-teens feel all their attempts
at communication end up with the same lecture from parents, they'll soon decide
that there's no point in trying.

Providing support to families where one or both parents have a learning difficulty
is a growing issue for professionals in health, education and welfare.
The movie I Am Sam, the story of a father with learning difficulties and his daughter,
and the Insight television program shown by SBS in 2002, have drawn attention
to some of the issues associated with parents with learning difficulties.
It has been shown that being a parent and having learning difficulties does not
inevitably result in child neglect or child abuse -- there is no clear relationship
between parental competence and intelligence (Booth & Booth, 1993; Haavik
& Menninger, 1981; Schilling, Schinke, Blythe & Barth, 1982).
We should look at parental competencies on a case-by-case basis rather than assuming
a general lack of competencies in parents with low IQ levels (Budd & Greenspan,
1985).

the sense of being pulled in opposite directions, unsure of which role to step
into at any given moment.
In my professional role as a child psychologist,
and family role as a father of two sons, I've often witnessed the painful effects
of children meeting up with situations they are unprepared for.
My approach
is to help children recognize how coping skills allow them to deal better with
demanding circumstances, and ultimately, offer preparation for the many challenges
ahead.
My convictions about children's need for vital social and emotional
skills building in today's challenging world led me to develop a parenting approach
called Parent Coaching.

They are frustrated
by their inability to make much progress when there is little support in the children's
homes for education and so many of the children live in isolated areas.
You work for one of the school districts and your supervisor asks you to plan
a family literacy program that will involve as many families as possible across
the county.

At a recent conference, a CIO leaned over and confessed to me that he has a "terminal

It's important to say yesâ¬"in
the right way.
The key to CIO success is figuring out how to focus the
IT agenda while you gain the reputation of a yea-sayer.
As a rapidly aging
parent of a 2-year-old, I will use an analogy near and dear to my heart: CIOs
should manage business partner relationships as they would raise children.
Your job is to create good IT citizens.
