The County Home Start Program is a contracted service through Northampton County Children and Youth Social Service and Lehigh County Children and Youth Social Service agencies.

Families are referred to the program through the county agencies and each family is assigned to a Parenting Specialist who will provide intensive parenting services in the home.

Funded and referred by Lehigh County Children and Youth, families enter the Nurturing Network to reduce their risk of child abuse and neglect.

Topics include child development, social-emotional health, safety and sanitation, and budgeting, among others.

Families receive referrals to various early child care and education programs, employment services, and mental health services, among other community resources.

Parenting Wisely (PW) is an interactive CD-ROM program designed for families at risk with children from early elementary to high school age.

It enhances child adjustment and potentially reduces delinquency, substance abuse and involvement with juvenile justice system.

In addition, PW builds parental confidence in parenting skills.

Through a self-administered, self-paced CD-ROM program, parents view video scenes of common family problems.

For each problem parents choose a solution and see it enacted and listen to a critique.

The fourth evaluation with teen parents showed significant improvements in parenting knowledge and application of principles to dealing effectively with toddlers (none for control groups).

Supporting Parents in a Socially Toxic Environment

This presentation examines several public policy issues that affect parenting, and does so within an ecological framework highlighting the role of "social toxicity" in challenging parental competence in late 20th century America.

For example, Sameroff and his colleagues (1987) report that the average IQ scores of 4 year old children are related to the number of psychological and social risk factors present in their lives.

This issue arises in the context of child maltreatment as "the price of privacy" (Garbarino et al., 1980), as well as any other situation in which children are either to be understood as citizens with a primary relationship with the state or as fundamentally private members of families with no direct link to the state under ordinary circumstances or as the private property of parents.

Introduction Gateway Drugs Recognizing Drug Use Prevention Teenage Parties Parenting Skill Tips Is There Hope?

This information begins with a discussion of the most commonly used drugs called "Gateway Drugs," alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana.

The other, and most important component, are the children's parents.

If your teenager stays overnight with a friend after the party, personally check with the parents.

Whether you think your child is on drugs or experimenting, there is evidence that some of today's teenagers do understand the problems of drug abuse as a result of education.

For example, the number of high school seniors who believe there are great "risks" in regular marijuana use has increased significantly in the past five years.

Becoming an effective parent does not come automatically.

There is no simple 'guide book' on how to be a good parent, so parents are often left struggling, wondering if they are doing the right thing or whether they are being too easy on their children.

Family Skills Education courses are run for parents of young children and teenagers, and designed to enhance family life and help parents feel more confident and secure about their parenting.

Participants will have the opportunity to develop friendships and establish a support group, which can be ongoing when the Family Skills Education group ends.

Parents who have attended our courses say the encouragement and support they received from the facilitator and other parents was very helpful.

Care for Self is closely connected with Advocate, a cluster of skills that enable parents to reach out to other institutions and the community.

Care for Self focuses on the parent's needs and well-being while Advocate focuses on the needs of the child.

Parents' knowledge of difficult developmental phases can help them provide for their children's needs while preventing abuse.

Cook (1991) found four parental attributes that contributed to expertise with infants: awareness of the child's goals and needs in a problem situation; developmentally sensitive understanding of the child and developmentally appropriate childrearing responses; responsiveness to cues from the child; and providing opportunities for the child to be selfdirective.

With unrestricted access, any child with a computer and a modem can access pornographic material in seconds, and once it's been seen, the pornography can never be entirely erased from the mind.

Just as disturbing as pornography itself is, so is the difficulty in protecting children from online predators who have a sexual appetite for unsuspecting children & women and can entice them through through friendly conversations.

Help is available when you need it, thanks to the cyber crime cells set up by the Indian Government.
