SUBJECT: INF #54 - Training for the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship...

Superintendent's Memorandum No. 46 was used as the transmittal for each school division's test results on the PSAT/NMSQT. The test results, known as the Summary of Answers, are made available to those school divisions testing twenty-five or more students. The sessions will be offered in Richmond and Harrisonburg. The dates and locations of the sessions are as follows. Please note that the date of the Richmond training session has been changed from April 14 to May 5. Harrisonburg, Virginia - April 29, 1998 Check-in for each session will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the training will begin at 9:00 a.m. It is anticipated that each session will end at approximately 3:00 p.m. Lunch will be provided. It is suggested that an instructional supervisor, high school administrator, or guidance counselor represent your school division.
  - We have classes in the evening during weekdays, normally around 4 - 5 p.m., and all day during Saturday. Depending on the student's level and their schedule, class schedule for individual student varies. To check a detailed schedule, please contact each branch directly. - Again, the schedule for an individual student is different. However, if the student is taking weekday classes, he/she will probably be coming in two to three days. As a junior, however, a good PSAT score could get students to be qualified as a for the National Merit Scholarship. That is why PSAT is also called National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test(NMSQT). It is designed to familiarize you with the kinds of questions you will see on the SAT, to suggest how you may do on the real SAT, and to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship. The PSAT is given to sophomores and juniors, but only juniors are eligible for the National Merit Scholarship.

College Test

The purpose of this test is to measure the skills and knowledge that have been developed since middle school. With breaks, the test will last about 3 -1/2 hours. The test is broken down as follows (in no set order): English - 45 minutes, 75 questions; Mathematics - 60 minutes, 60 questions; Reading - 35 minutes, 40 questions; Science - 35 minutes, 40 questions. On certain dates, the ACT will consist of an additional 5th test which consists of questions that are being researched for possible use on future ACTs. This 5th section is used for experimental purposes only, and will not be graded or scored. The scoring method for the ACT is based upon the total number of correct answers, which means there is no guessing penalty. English, Math, Reading, and Science scores are converted to scaled scores between 1-36. In addition to SAT practice, juniors that take the PSAT may qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Program based on their results. National Merit Scholarship Program

Education World ® - Curriculum: Good Grief, It's Grammar Time!

Are grumbles all you hear when teaching grammar? Try a fresh approach -- a few new "hooks" your students will remember -- and check out a bunch of grammar sites on the Internet that will placate even the loudest grammar grumblers! Grammar! Can't live with it; can't live without it... As an English teacher in a middle school, it is incumbent on me to teach that most dreaded of subjects. But I've found that there ARE ways to make it a little less odious. Trying to humanize grammar as much as possible, I give students "hooks" to help them remember the rules. Let me share a few with you. I also review standardized tests my students will be taking in high school -- the SAT and ACT College Board Exams, the PSAT National Merit Scholarship Exam, and English SAT Achievement tests -- to get an idea of what grammar skills my students will be expected to know well by the time they finish high school. For National Merit Scholarships, the PSAT English score is counted twice and the math ...
