In addition to serving as a useful warm-up to the SAT
Reasoning Test, the PSAT is also used as the initial screening
tool for the National Merit Scholarship Program administered
by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). A brief
overview of the National Merit Program for 2006 (for students
taking the PSAT in October 2004) is detailed below. Although
taking the PSAT at one of the October administrations is the
easiest way to qualify for the National Merit Program, the NMSC
does provide alternatives to students who miss these dates.
The initial stages of the Merit Program are judged entirely
based on a student's selection index. Only Semifinalists are
eligible to advance further in the competition for Merit Scholarships.
Semifinalists who meet eligibility standards (students must
submit an application, high school record, and SAT I scores
among other requirements) will be among the 15,000 National
Merit Finalists named in February 2006. National Merit Scholars

Merit Scholarship How good of a chance does a non resident have
at getting one of these merit scholarships? I'm not sure.. I'm
a resident, and the Regents Scholarship they gave me was really
wimpy ($1500, nonrenewable), but I read the letter and that
was only for people from MI high schools, so I don't know about
thw other scholarships. By the way, I'm not really going to
U of M. It's kind of standard for everyone who lives in my area
to apply. But I hope you get a big scholarship. :-) Good luck!

National Merit Scholarship Program The National Merit
Scholarship Program is the nation's largest independently financed
competition for college undergraduate scholarships. Young people
entered the 2002 program by taking the Preliminary SAT National
Merit Scholarship Qualifying Tests (PSAT/NMSQT) in 2001 when
high school juniors. This test, administered in approximately
20,000 secondary schools, served as an initial screening device
for over one million interested students who met participation
requirements. Nashville students who qualified as semifinalists

Just when you think SJS can't do anything worse, it goes
and outdoes itself. Let's take a look at this MERIT SCHOLARSHIP
ad that appeared on the PDN today (2/6/04). The good news, they
didn't use a CHECK BOOK as their main graphic like they did
with their awful 50% OFF ad. The bad news, they put a grown
man kicking what appears to be soccer ball. Call me picky, but
really ... couldn't they have taken the time to photograph actual
children? But let's get to the real meat and potato here ...
The merit scholarship will allow children who are gifted in
music, drama, art, sports or leadership a grant worth $2,500!
It may just be my opinion, but would it not be in the best interest
of the school to offer this type of scholarship to a student
who currently attends SJS but may need the 'scholarship' to
continue to afford the education? But perhaps, the real goal
with the merit program is so that SJS can lure a talent it feels
is (are), currently lacking in the student body.
