In a move that experts believe will have repercussions
across the country, the University of California has decided
to withdraw from the prestigious National Merit Scholarship
program and redirect the money to other merit-based grants.

scholarships UC awarded two years ago. UC says it will honor
National Merit Scholarships already awarded. National Merit
Scholarship Corp. officials say they are disappointed with the
decision and don't see how they could broaden the selection
process in a feasible and timely way. All the public and private
