UC to withdraw from National Merit Scholarship program | The San Diego Union-Tribune

In a move that experts believe will have repercussions across the country, the University of California has decided to withdraw from the prestigious National Merit Scholarship program and redirect the money to other merit-based grants. Six of the system's nine undergraduate campuses had been sponsoring the National Merit Scholarships for years. Last year, UC paid about $735,000 in National Merit Scholarships to 618 students. About 99 percent of the 1.3 million students who participate in the National Merit Scholarship program are eliminated solely on the basis of their PSAT score. The money is a fraction of the $62 million in merit-based and $187.5 million in need-based scholarships UC awarded two years ago. UC says it will honor National Merit Scholarships already awarded. National Merit Scholarship Corp. officials say they are disappointed with the decision and don't see how they could broaden the selection process in a feasible and timely way. All the public and private ...
