Michigan
Merit Award
The Michigan Merit Award was established by the Michigan
legislature in 1999 (Public Act 94) for the high school graduating
Class of 2000 and after. About 49,000 high school graduates
earn the award each year. Overview of the program, including
information about how to qualify. Time may be running out
for you to utilize the second half of your award. Students
who initiated the first half of their Merit Award in the 2003-04
academic year MUST have the second half used by the end of
this (2004-05) academic year or forfeit the balance. The law
changed beginning with the Class of 2003. Students have four
(4) years to use their award but once the student receives
the first half of the award the second half MUST be used in
the next academic year. Failure to use the award over two
consecutive academic years results in forfeiture of any remaining
balance. Certify your Award Online: The earliest we can make
a payment for the Class of 2005 will be late October 2005.
Thirty-three members of the Class of 2002 were honored,
placing Shaker second in the state among public schools in these
two programs combined. The students were selected on the basis
of their scores on last year's Preliminary Scholastic Assessment
Test, which also serves as the National Merit Scholar Qualifying
Test (PSAT/NMSQT). One Shaker student, Elliot Karr, went on
to score a perfect 1600 on the SAT. "Amid the smiles, laughter
and their infectious energy and enthusiasm, this year's scholars
represent different genders, races, ethnicities and religions.
"Whether on the stage, in a Model United Nations delegation,
or on the field, these students are role models for us all.
In short, they are a shining example of the very best our school
community and Shaker Heights has to offer. My congratulations
to each of them for being honored by the National Merit and
National Achievement Programs and for continuing to achieve
the highest standards of excellence." The National Merit ...
The test is designed to help students practice for the
SAT. It's also used to determine the test-taker's eligibility
for scholarships awarded by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
Colleges don't use the results of this test to determine you
eligibility for admission. The PSAT is offered on one of two
days in October (usually Tuesday or Saturday) at individual
sites across the nation. Your PSAT scores are computed to form
a selection index; your final selection index is compared to
that of every other junior test-takers in the state to determine
your eligibility for National Merit Recognition. If your selection
index places you in roughly the top 5 percent in your state,
you will receive a National Merit Letter of Commendation and
become a "commended scholar." If you become a semi-finalist,
you need to submit an application to the NMSC to qualify to
become a finalist and receive scholarships. Ultimately, candidates
are awarded scholarships ...
