arts education. To accomplish this, the program requires students
to interact with the writings of individuals with exceptional
intellectual merit and to engage in the Great Conversation.
Great-Books of the Western Tradition Traditional Great-Books
colleges offer a broad-based liberal arts education with curricula
centered around reading and discussing the books and articles
that have been most significant in the formation of our society.
Taken together, this constitutes the Great Conversation.
Scholarships Programs Because the State Farm Companies
Foundation contributes to national, established scholarship
programs, it does not provide scholarships directly to individuals.
The Foundation provides funding to scholarship programs that
are administered by the American Indian College Fund, the Hispanic
Scholarship Fund, and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
An independent committee of scholars administers the Doctoral
Dissertation program. In addition, the Foundation provides scholarships
through its relationships with priority colleges and universities.
NOTE: State Farm Companies Foundation is not involved in the
selection process for scholarships. Independent agencies or
a committee of college educators selects all scholarship winners.
State Farm Companies Foundation reserves the right to discontinue
or change these programs at any time.

As one of the nation's most affordable selective colleges,
Wesleyan offers a strong merit scholarship program as well as
a comprehensive financial aid program. Applying for a Merit
Scholarship Eligible students interested in receiving priority
consideration for a merit scholarship should complete all required
admission application materials by the stated deadlines. No
additional scholarship application is required. All scholarships
for First-Year students are renewable for a maximum of eight
semesters (4 years). Minimum eligibility requirements are listed
below for Wesleyan's academic scholarships and leadership awards.
There are a limited number of scholarships. Simply satisfying
these requirements does not guarantee a student will receive
a given scholarship. Upon review of applicants' admission credentials,
the Scholarship Committee may choose to invite students who
have not fully satisfied the stated eligibility requirements.
All applicants to the School are evaluated for merit
scholarship consideration when they submit their portfolio for
an admissions review. If an applicant's portfolio demonstrates
exceptional levels of thoughtfulness, maturity, skill and conceptual
development and if the applicant is found to be more than an
appropriate candidate for SAIC, he or she will be recommended
to compete for scholarship. Applicants are not required to submit
a separate application for the scholarship competition. Admission
staff and faculty counselors review portfolios and forward their
nominations to the Merit Review Committee. Assembling a Merit
Scholarship Portfolio Merit nominees must be admitted to the
School before participating in the Merit Scholarship Competition.
ALL students should specify which work is to be included in
the Merit Scholarship Competition. Applicants are not considered
eligible to participate in the merit scholarship competition
if they have not fulfilled admission ...

Seniors Anna Locke, Raytown High School; Ryan Dusheke,
Raytown South High School; and Lisa Laney, Raytown South High
School; are three of approximately 15,000 students nationwide
who have advanced to the finalist standing in the prestigious
academic scholarship program. The three students will be competing
for some 8,000 merit scholarships worth $32 million. The National
Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition
and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter
the National Merit Program by taking the PSAT/NMSQT, a test
that serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.3 million
entrants each year, and by meeting several program requirements.
Ryan Dusheke earned a nearly perfect score on the SAT I with
a 780 in verbal and a 780 in math. Certain college entrance
programs require different subject levels of the SAT. Dusheke
chose the more advanced section of math. Dusheke then took the
SAT II and got a perfect score of 800 ...
To avoid a finding of discrimination that would jeopardize
their federal funding, ETS and the College Board agreed to revise
the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test
(PSAT/NMSQT) in 1997 to "sufficiently address the allegations"
in FairTest's complaint. But, rather than move to a system based
on genuine academic performance in the classroom, as FairTest
proposed, the test-makers simply plan to add a multiple-choice
"writing" component to the PSAT/NMSQT. Data from similar exams,
such as the SAT II Writing Test, suggest that females will score
higher than males on the new section, thus increasing their
chances for selection as scholarship semifinalists. The FairTest
complaint argued that the lion's share of National Merit Scholarships
went to boys each year because they score higher on the PSAT/NMSQT,
although girls earn better grades in both high school and college
when matched for the same academic courses. For years, ETS,
the College Board, and the ...
