Local employers of recent Boise State graduates were generally pleased with graduates'
preparation for the workforce, according to a recent survey.
Top skills
in importance included possessing a good work ethic, listening intelligently,
thinking through problems, and working effectively with team members.
Critical thinking, as defined by "thinking through problems" and "recognizing
and defining problems" was the one area that was above average in importance
but below average in satisfaction.
When asked what types of positions
Boise State graduates have held in their organization, over half of the respondents
(58%) indicated that at least some of their positions were in the area of education
and/or training.

The functional behavioral assessment may show that, although ineffective, the
child may engage in the inappropriate behavior to escape or avoid a situation:
(1) for which he or she lacks the appropriate skills; or (2) because she or he
lacks appropriate, alternative skills and truly believes this behavior is effective
in getting what he or she wants or needs.
For example, a child may engage
in physically violent behavior because he or she believes violence is necessary
to efficiently end the confrontational situation, and may believe that these behaviors
will effectively accomplish his or her goals.
If this is the case, the
intervention may address that deficit by including, within the larger plan, a
description of how to teach the problem-solving skills needed to support the child.
The fact is that although most of us like to think we're good listeners, almost
everyone needs to improve their listening skills.
Learning to Listen offers
a fresh approach to this common problem.
It is the critical complement
to effective communication and yet when it comes to skill development, listening
tends to take a back seat to flashier aspects of communication like presentation
skills.
HRDQ developed this learning instrument in response to specific
requests from our customers for training resources on listening.
While
some customers told us that they expected to teach listening as a stand alone
topic, most said they intended to present listening as a component of a broader
skill.

Korean government has recognized a chronic problem in
English education that college graduates are not prepared enough to communicate
with foreigners even though they have at least 10-year formal English education.
Even worse, every year a lot of students, regardless of their grade level, go
to English-speaking countries only for improving their English speaking skills,
spending approximately $10,000 a year for tuition and housing.
This teacher-training
course sponsored by Korean Educational Department has been developed for Korean
English teachers to be able to teach communicative skills, as well as grammatical
skills, effectively to all the grade-level students using Cooperative Learning
techniques which are widely used in schools and educational institutions in the
United States nowadays.
2. Given lecture, hand-outs, and instructor-led
modeling, the teacher training participant should be able to demonstrate knowledge
of Cooperative Learning and its activities during group discussions and integrate
those activities into micro-teaching without error.

Salespeople
who are able to supply their customers this new breed of ROI will certainly be
able to provide them the original breed -- the customer's Return on Investment
for your product or service.
Time after time we uncover salespeople who
have poor listening skills, poorer questioning skills and an apparent disregard
for the prospects.
Salespeople tend to be so focused on their own product,
meeting a quota, earning a commission, winning a contest, staying ahead of competition,
pleasing a sales manager or keeping their job that they tend to forget the key
to achieving all these things.
It is simply paying attention to -- listening
to -- the prospect or existing customers.
The Reading for Information skill is an employee's skill in reading and understanding

for the tasks of the job, consider the difficulty of the materials employees must
read and how hard it is for employees to find and make use of the information
they need in the reading materials.
The Locating Information skill is
an employee's skill in using information taken from workplace graphics such as
diagrams, blueprints, floor plans, tables, forms, graphs (including bar charts,
pie charts, and line graphs), flowcharts, and instrument gauges.

Many people pay thousands of dollars for seminars to gain
the skill and confidence necessary to face an audience.
But there's another
option that is less expensive and held in high regard in business circles -- Toastmasters

This organization has been around for nearly 80 years and
offers a proven -- and enjoyable -- way to practice and hone the communication
and leadership skills of its members.
From one club started in 1924 at
the YMCA in Santa Ana, California, in 1924, Toastmasters has grown to become the
world's leading organization helping people conquer their pre-speech jitters.

This course will be especially useful for three
kinds of students: (a) those people who plan to go to graduate school in one of
the helping fields and want a head start relative to their classmates; (b) those
who do not plan to immediately go to graduate school and want some preparation
for entry level human services jobs; and (c) for people who plan to work outside
of the helping fields, but know that listening skills are essential for their
personal and professional success.
