BYU-Idaho, employees, administrators, classifications, exempt, duties, Fair Labor Standards, Personnel, law, supervise, salary ranges.
BYU-Idaho, under the direction of the President of the Church and the Board of Trustees, adopts a conservative, yet fair, philosophy regarding the salaries of its employees.

Each administrative and staff job at BYU-Idaho has a Job Description which is kept on file in the Personnel office.

The law was originally passed in 1938 and has been amended since that time.

The term "exempt" means that some jobs (usually those higher in pay) are "exempt" from the regulations of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

At BYU-Idaho the jobs classified as "exempt" are administrators and faculty.

The Fair Labor Standards Act establishes the various classifications of jobs and the rules which govern these.

More jobs seem available for technical writers than ever before.

But just three years ago, the market for technical writers seemed sluggish.

As with the 1994 survey, I wanted to determine the salary range of our chapter's membership, as well as the age range, the gender breakdown, and the level of education.

As you can see, that category had the biggest response.

Here's a graph that shows how many of us are contractors and how many of us are "permanent" employees.

"Permanent" employees were more likely to report that technical writing met expectations in terms of job satisfaction than contractors were.

Report what skills we think are important to our profession.

Negotiating salary

http://www.career.vt.edu/JOBSEARC/Salaries/Negotiating.htm
employer, negotiating, cost, salaries, tactful, living, facts, graduating, featured questions, salary expert, play.
Many employers do not negotiate salary with graduating students.

First, prepare a case based on facts.

(Be prepared to show evidence of that salary, such as a copy of an offer letter. The employer with whom you're negotiating may want proof.)

See salary relocation calculators, to compare salaries in different locations.

Ask the employer, in a tactful and diplomatic way, if the salary offer is open to negotiation.

You can weigh the options you have.

Be prepared for the possibility that the employer still may not change the salary offer.

U.S. Department of Labor -- WHD: FairPay Fact Sheets by Exemption - Salary Basis

http://www.dol.gov/esa/regs/compliance/whd/fairpay/fs17g_salary.htm
employees, deductions, exemption, salary basis, paid, improper deductions, pay, wage, FLSA, fee, practice.
The FLSA requires that most employees in the United States be paid at least the federal minimum wage for all hours worked and overtime pay at time and one-half the regular rate of pay for all hours worked over 40 hours in a workweek.

To qualify for exemption, employees generally must meet certain tests regarding their job duties and be paid on a salary basis at not less than $455 per week.

If the employee is ready, willing and able to work, deductions may not be made for time when work is not available.

The employer will lose the exemption if it has an "actual practice" of making improper deductions from salary.
