(AP) -- A family from Indiana began their vacation in
the Florida Keys despite a fire in their rental vehicle that
destroyed numerous possessions as well as a $15,000 motorized
wheelchair used for their son, afflicted with cerebral palsy.
After arriving at Fort Lauderdale International Airport Wednesday,
Brian and Deborah Hackett, daughter Cassie, 16, and son Jason,
22, were traveling in a handicapped-equipped rental van south
on the Florida Turnpike in southern Miami when they noticed
the car was "acting funny." They pulled off the side of the
road when fire suddenly broke out from the engine area and quickly
engulfed the vehicle. All occupants got out safely, but the
van and its contents were ravaged by flames. "It was just a
matter of seconds and it was all in flames, but we're all OK,"
said Deborah Hackett of Trafalgar, Ind., about 25 miles south
of Indianapolis. "I got my purse, but lost my suitcase with
my clothes and cameras. My husband only has one shoe, and ...
