One branch had three cross-croslets in the shield, with
a cross-croslet and dagger ~altierwise for the crest; the motto
being 'Crux mihi grata quies'. As only those who were in the
holy wars were entitled to have a crtss in their armorial bearings,
it is fair to presume that, as the Eddy family is a very ancient
one (Eady being a name found in Domesday Book), some if not
many of the race, like their descendants, manfully combatted
against irreligion and infidelity, and, having devoted the sword
to the cross, found in the latter the grateful rest, as is indicated
by the above admirable motto." He did not state who the best
authorities were, but in the engraving printed in his book he
rejected the crosses crosslet in the shield, retaining the three
old men's heads, with the crest described above. It has been
used by various members of the family in this country for fifty
years and it also appears in Matthew's "American Armoury and
Blue Book." No crest or motto is ...
From your interesting memoir I gain the assurance of
two facts: The first is that the original arms of the Phelps
family were a black (sable) lion chained and rampant. I am glad
to ascertain this, because I observe that the Irish family and
the Delafield Phelpses, of which later branch John Phelps of
Salisbury, Secretary of the House of Commons and regicides,
was a member, have adopted a coat of arms, given them doubtless,
by Oliver Cromwell, and consisting of a wolf salient, between
crosslets. Your branch of the family emigrated long before the
civil war of Charles I. The Irish and Salisbury branches were
later offsets, and the original stock remained in the environs
of Tewkesbury and Twyning, where one of the parish hamlets is
called "Phelps." I have got the name of a party at Tewkesbury
through whom I will endeavor to obtain a copy of all the entries
relative to baptisms, marriages and deaths of the Phelps family,
since the register exists. You may rest assured that the ...

Will you be able to obtain my family crest for me? This
has to be the most common question we receive. Firstly there
is no such thing as a family crest. It is neither a crest nor
belongs to a family. Technically the crest is a small feature
of a coat of arms. It is the coat of arms people seek. Coat
of arms are like trade marks in the business world. They only
belong to their owners. A coat of arms was granted to an individual
and belongs to that person and their immediate primary heirs
only.
Below are just a few of the surnames we have available.
We have over 1 million Coat of Arms on file. If you don't see
your name here, order anyways, and we will research it. SELECT

Children can begin to think about their family histories
and their own lives by making a family crest. BACKGROUND Discuss
family crests. Then brainstorm with children to get ideas that
could represent their family histories or lives. Here are just
a few of the many possibilities: In each section, draw a picture
that represents one idea about your family. Some children may
prefer to cut out pictures from magazines or use a family photograph.
Laminate the finished crests, if possible. Have children share
and compare their crests.
