The Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation is building
the world's largest database of correlated genetic and ge-nealogical
information to enable genealogical research to be performed
using DNA analysis techniques. DNA samples with associated
4-generation pedigree charts have so far been collected from
approximately 40,000 volunteers. Up to 170 regions of DNA
are currently analyzed for each individ-ual, and the corresponding
pedigree chart is extended as far as genealogical databases
allow, to currently include over 700,000 ancestral records.
Molecular genealogy is the application of DNA anal-ysis techniques
and statistical population genetics to the task of reconstructing
unknown genealogies from the ge-netic and genealogical information
of living individuals. The vast majority of our DNA is identical
to that of all others in the human race. From the point of
view of present-day genetic analysis, it is as if branches

The Verderese Family Tree in America
Patsy was born to Dominic Verderese, a farmer and his
wife Domenica Oliva in Palagiano, a province of Taranto in Italy.
He was the last of their 14 children and one of only two sons.
Early in his life, Patsy knew he wasn't interested in farming,
so his father arranged for him to become an apprentice to a
local shoemaker and harness maker. By the age of 12, this enterprising
young boy was running a small shoemaking business of his own.
Patsy's great love of music was an influence as well. She encouraged
them to value family bonds and to be strong in their Catholic
faith. She understood the importance of good food in the Italian
family and was an excellent cook and baker who served large
meals to family and guests. They traveled back to Italy on several
occasions, spending the summer renewing family ties and visiting
places from their childhood. They were honored and respected
by all who knew them and deeply loved by their family and friends.

A computer lab, scanner, and a digital camera. Activity: Students
will design their family tree beginning with grandparents, mom
and dad, siblings, and even pets. Students may bring in pictures
of the members of their family to scan and use the digital camera
to take a picture of themselves. The images will be imported
into their documents and labeled. Lines should be used to make
the connections between the members. Alternate Activity: Students
could design their family tree using clipart to represent each
member of their family. Cumberland Family
Tree 3 The Selection lists option allows the user
to specify a color code for these lists and display this color
key on the family group display. In the tree format, each person's
date of birth and death is displayed when the name is selected.
Each family group may be expanded or compressed in a manner
similar to expanding a Windows folder list. After entry they
appear in the event window with icons indicating whether the
event is an individual or family event, if there are notes,
sources, or if the event is marked as sensitive. CFTW offers
the user three options for sharing the family information. It
creates an index page of individuals and a series of family
pages. These pages list the family data much as it appears in
story form. Recording the database and the freely available
CFT Viewer on a CD allows family members to investigate a read
only copy of the database. This is a Shareware program and as
such is available by download from the Cumberland Family Tree
website. http://www.mumford.ca/reportcard/cftw.pdf
