Your family's memories are your most precious resource.
Start with WHAT and WHO you know. Sit down with the family and
fill in all the names you can. Interview the older members of
your family and write down, or record on tape (with their per-mission,
of course), the many interesting stories that are told, along
with dates, names and places. The Next Step: After entering
personal knowledge of family members, you may want to begin
searching local records. Family Bibles, probate courts, county
and municipal records offices, churches, cemeteries, li-braries,
and historical societies can provide additional information.
Tracking down family records is part research and part detective
work, but it is always enjoyable and interesting. Area Sources

their family history. The KSHS website was launched in 1993,
through the efforts of Steven Chinn and Lynn H. Nelson, and
was hosted at the University of Kansas. The original website
was developed by two students based on materials supplied by
the Society. The KSHS site was the first state or local history
society anywhere to be online. Stephen Chinn took over the site
management duties later in 1994.

family tree: a pedigree chart or drawing of a tree that has
all your ancestors in the branches. By creating a family tree,
students get to see the patterns within their own families.
Each individual family structure may not look like the traditional
"family tree," for there are many different types of families
today--extended family members, "step" and "half" relations,
and nontraditional family structures. Tell them that the class
is going to study and research where our families are from and
everyone will make a "family tree." 3. Give definitions for
these terms (above): ancestors, genealogy, family tree, generation,
maternal, and paternal. With the returned worksheets, the students
can begin putting together their individual family trees. 3.

Tree is an opportunity for people of Maltese origin living all
over the world to leave their mark on the country of their forefathers.
A plaque is attached to the tree planted by Maltese emigrants
or descendants showing the name and city of residence of the
family which acquired the tree. The Roots Circle, within Malta's
National Park in Ta` Qali, offers a choice of five different
Mediterranean species; Olive Trees, Evergreen Oaks, Judas Trees,
Dwarf Palms and white poplar trees. With over 100 registrations
received to date, demand for the trees has been intense, and
a second site for Plant Your Family Tree has been identified
within the Ta' Qali National Park. Among the various Maltese

This Minnesota Book Award winner is the story of the
evolution of humankind, told from the beginning of life on earth
to the present day. A family spends the day at the beach, learning
about humanity's ancestors. Read the story slowly. It is a dramatic
book in which a lot happens. There are a lot of difficult or
unfamiliar words. Show a sample of a "real" family tree and
compare it to the one drawn in the book Have children draw their
own family trees (and they can use their biological family or
possibly the family in which they live). Ask them to ask their
parents/caregivers for names of great and great-great grandparents
to fill out the tree.
