Researching your family history can be difficult if
you do not know where to look. Circle the words listed below
to find some of the places you can look for information to
build your family tree. Words can be forward, backward or
diagonal. Genealogists record information in an established
manner to avoid confusion. 1. Always write your name on the
first line of your family tree. Here are some activities you
can do to learn about genealogy or the tracing of your family
tree. Here is your very own family tree. You do not have to
end your family tree here. Your family tree can keep growing
and growing and growing.

Have you ever wondered why the Silicon Forest took root
even though the region never had a Stanford or MIT? My dissertation
research concludes that the absence of a major research university
did not deter the Forest from growing because the two mainstay
Silicon Forest companies--Tektronix and Intel--filled this gap
by functioning as surrogate universities. Both companies attracted
and trained a qualified high-tech labor pool and conducted cutting-edge
research and development. Furthermore, Tektronix and Intel are
the main incubators for many Silicon Forest start-ups. An updated
Silicon Forest family tree poster will visualize the family
relationships of start-up companies, tracing their roots back
to the 1940s. Since last October, I have been collecting information
on the genealogy of Silicon Forest start-ups. 158 companies
responded to a mail and online survey, which was supported by
the Institute of Portland Metropolitan Studies and the help
of the Software Association ...

Activity 2: star-shaped question cards (master included
in this lesson) Activity 3: materials will vary depending on
the selected format (see activity) Suggested introduction by
the teacher: "I have a CD-ROM that will enable us to `travel'
to Japan. In our `travels,' we are going to learn a little bit
about the coun-try and culture of Japan, and at the same time,
we are going to learn a little bit about ourselves. Before we
start the CD-ROM, however, let's think about what we already
know about Japan." On the large poster board or mural paper,
make a 3-columned K-W-L chart. Instruct the students to take
them home and fill out the Family Tree with an adult. Make sure
the students understand that this is an activity that everyone
should be included in, so they should feel free to fill out
the Family Tree only as com-pletely as is comfortable. After
the students return with the completed Family Trees, have them
share their information about the countries they or their relatives

Tracing your family tree is more than just sitting down
for half an hour and working back through a few parish registers.
Genealogy can be a difficult and time consuming task; but it
can also be stimulating and rewarding. By consulting a wide
variety of sources you may discover a great deal about your
ancestors, and what began as a vague idea can become an expansive
family tree. This leaflet is designed to help you find your
way through the rich variety of genealogical sources which are
available when you visit the Record Office. Record Office staff
are always available to help, if something is unclear. They
are a valuable and much-used source for family historians as
it is likely that many of your ancestors will have been baptised,
married or buried by the local parish church. We have the IGI

counties: the index for the whole world (on CD-rom) is available

Complete a family tree chart and list one decision made
in their family that does not please all family members accordingly:
Knowledge: identify members of their family on a family tree
and one decision made by the family that does not please every
member of the family; Reasoning: explain why the decision caused
displeasure; and Communication: complete a family tree form;
draw a picture showing the decision causing displeasure and
write a statement explaining it; express all ideas in a way
that provides evidence of knowledge and reasoning processes.
3. Discuss the concept that a family is a social group and study
examples of family trees. 4. Show example of your family tree
and explain the relationship of each person named on it to you.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION This activity works well in a
small community where some of the students will have descended
from that community's founding family. On a classroom wall,
display the family tree of the founding family. 1.WHO the founders
of your community were; 2.WHERE the founding family came from
(have students locate and discuss these places); 3.WHAT business
or trade prevailed at the time and how the founding family related
to these occupations; 4.HOW and WHY the settlers came to your
area; 5.WHEN the founding families arrived. Have the students
do their own family tree going as far back as their grandparents
(some students will be able to go further). Ask them to share
family stories with their children during the unit. Include
a Table of Contents, a family tree, a timeline of your personal
history and either photos or drawings illustrating the highlights
of your life. Read aloud The Family Album by Bernice Thurman
Hunter. [In this particular instance, students ...

They then complete a simple family tree for their own

changing. To foster a greater understanding of the interdependence
of family members and an appreciation of each person's contribution
to the family unit. Talk a little bit about the children's perception
of "family" and explain each of the four types of families dealt
with in Handout 1.* Discuss what events alter a family--for
example, the birth of children, divorce or separation, children
leaving home, death. * Part 2: In Handout 3 the children will
make a family tree. Have the children fill in their family name
on the tree trunk (either one or two surnames) and draw in branches
to represent themselves and members of their immediate family.
Children could write an anecdote or fond memory about a family
happening or a family member to accompany the family tree. They
could also develop a "book ...
As part of the fair, students will switch households
with another family for one week and thereby immerse themselves
in a different culture. As the names are being announced, Penny
becomes alarmed when she realizes she will be switching with
the Zamines, a Pakistani family. She is given a hijab to wear
on her head, and when she is hungry and asks what the family
will be eating, she is told that it's Ramadan, a time when Muslims
fast from sunup to sundown. At the end of Ramadan, her new family
goes out to dinner together to celebrate. After the meal, as
Penny is walking back to the Muslim family's house, she discovers
it has been defaced with graffiti that reads: "Go back to your
country!" She describes how the Zamines may be "weird" and different,
but so is every other family, and that what matters within a
family is that everybody cares about one another. Part of knowing
your heritage is being familiar with your family tree. Prior
to this lesson, have students ...

Israel Hansson's family was quite poor and, according to the
local priest, the family had such poor clothes that they dould
not attend church service. It is not possible to determine whether
there is any family connection with farmers who were registered
as owners of Järkvissle 1 in Liden parish in the province of
Medelpad before Jon Jonsson. Based on the same type of circumstantial
evidence, there seems to be a possible family connection to
the previous registered owners of hemmanet (the farm) Sillre
3, and it is here assumed that Simon Jonsson (registered as
owner in 1628) was father of Hans Simonsson. There is no evidence
that there is a family connection between Une Persson and the
farmers who were registered as owners |
