offerd@cc.huji.ac.il My interest in family trees was
awakened many years ago, probably as a result of the consciousness
of roots in our family. This was a challenge unlike the single-family
tree I had dealt with hitherto: here were millions of people,
and I needed to think and plan how best to build a family tree
on such a scale. A family tree is a technical, graphic way to
portray the system of relationships between people of the same
family. Graphically represented, family trees spread outwards
to include the various individuals in the family, with different
generations shown at different heights. Our national family
tree was designed for tax purposes, and according to current
tax laws, a person's income and property are assessed on the
basis of the family unit to which he belongs. In order to help
the system's users (i.e. the tax departments), it was necessary
to build a computerized family tree of the entire population

Students will work in groups to develop a fictional family
tree by creating characters drawn from the presentation groups
of the above lesson. Each group will present the portion of
the family tree that depicts the lives of family members during
the particular time assigned to the groups. Skills Attained
Students will be able to: Organize information they obtain from
websites and the video series to produce a fictional family
tree; and Create a short obituary for each person on the tree.
Have each group decide on the basic names and personalities
of the family members. Assign family members to group members
who write a short obituary of each one. Your assignment is to
take the period of the history of slavery your group researched
and create a family tree. Take the information your group has
gathered and create a fictional family tree for that period.
Once your tree is complete, each member of the group should
select members of the tree, then write a short obituary for

Using the same color, cut the borders using pieces 2 & 3.
6. Cut a big tree for your central image. Cut 4 small trees
for the corners and glue them to the layered mats from step
4. 7. Arrange the left side page: glue the background square,
center tree, borders, and corner trees to your page. 8. Use
the same number of leaves as photos of family members. Glue
the photos to the leaves, and the leaves to the page surrounding
the tree. 9. On the right side page, glue the background square,
borders, and corner trees as you did in step 7. 10.Use the center
of the right side page for more formal photos, and journaling.
This report presents a family tree of theories, concepts,
methodologies and strategies for change in the field of development
communication. The goal of this report is to clarify the understandings
and the uses of the most influential theories. Theories explain
the nature and causes of a given problem and provide guidelines
for practical interventions. It also analyzes the main understandings
of development communication that express the outlook of the
main "trunks" and "branches" of the family tree. Development
communication commonly refers to the application of communication
strategies and principles in the developing world. The implicit
assumption was that there was one form of development as expressed
in developed countries that underdeveloped societies needed
to replicate. Although a multiplicity of theories and concepts
emerged during the past fifty years, studies and interventions
have fundamentally offered two different diagnoses and answers
to the problem of .

Introduction A family tree is a technical, graphic way to portray
the system of relationships between people of the same family.
Graphically represented, family trees spread outwards to include
the various individuals in the family, with different generations
shown at different heights. Our national family tree was designed
for tax purposes, and according to current tax laws, a person's
income and property are assessed on the basis of the family
unit to which he belongs. Planning the Family Tree The users
of the system are accustomed to receive their basket of services
in computerized form, and it was clear that we must give the
same form to the family tree .

Tracing family histories is a fascinating study that
tells us about our families who lived long ago. You must do
detective work on records, learning about those who preceded
you in your family. Visits with older members of your family
will be meaningful in many ways. The family traditions with
which you have grown up probably happened, but maybe not exactly
as rumored. Perhaps your grand-aunt was the heroine instead
of your great-grandmother, or your great-grandfather may have
been both local lawyer and circuit riding preacher, or the family
home may have been originally in Maryland rather than Virginia
as you believed. Do not be alarmed if family memories are different
from what you later discover to be true through public records
or library research. A birth date could not have been recorded
at the actual time of the birth if the family Bible was not
published until a later date. You may be rewarded by family
ties with distant relatives who will enjoy your company as .

In planning the recent Centennial Meeting of the Coo-per
Ornithological Society, Russell P. Balda, chairman of the Centennial
Committee, asked me to prepare an academic family lineage of
the Ph.D. students of the two Millers. This provided background
information for the first-time presentation of the Loye and
Alden Miller Research Award. The academic tree displayed at
the meeting triggered a small cascade of emendations incorporated
into the version offered here. While made as accurate as pos-sible
at this time, I suspect that more corrections or additions will
turn up, as indeed they did up to the submittal of this write-up.
Some additional back-ground information follows. Loye Holmes
Miller (1874-l 970) began his teaching career in 1904 at the
Los Angeles State Normal School, which later became UCLA, and
he retired in 1943. It was only in the last nine years of his
active service that the Ph.D. degree was awarded and, in that
time, he had two M.A. and two Ph.D. students..
