Ivy League scholarships - NYRR Message Boards

schools, athletes, scholarships, aid, financial aid, academics, ivy league, recruit, posts, ivies, money.
I've now read two articles on the homepage this week that talk about Canadian athletes getting scholarships to Ivy League schools.

From this article http://www.owensoundsuntimes.com/webapp/sitepages/content.asp?contentID=31996&catname=Local%20sports "Dalgarno didn?t plan on going to an American university, instead focusing on his education at a Canadian school.

The second one doesn't actually say scholarship, it could be financial aid, but it's sort of implied.

I didn't think I sounded bitter, but if I did that wasn't the intent.

I actually like the Ivy league schools and am impressed with how well they do just like everyone else.

Originally posted by floppy: It is also unfair to the other Division I schools that the Ivy's can do this, because with the so called need based or academic scholarships there is no NCAA limit like the "scholarship" schools have.

Cotuit Athletic Association -- Scholarship Recipients

Cotuit, high school, scholarship, high school seniors, recipients, applications, Cotuit Athletic Association, Sandwich, Mashpee, Manuel Robello, award.
Established and first awarded in 1987, the scholarship is given by the Cotuit Athletic Association in memory of Manuel Robello, a member of the first Cotuit Kettleer baseball team in 1947 and a long-time supporter of the Cotuit Athletic Association until his death on March 19, 1986.

The award had historically been awarded to a Barnstable High School senior who intended to major in a sports related field.

Recent awards, however, have been expanded to include high school seniors who are legal residents of Barnstable, Mashpee, and Sandwich, with no restriction on college major.

The CAA Scholarship Committee reviews the applications and makes the selections of the recipients.

Faced with the daunting task of raising athletic scholarship funds to a minimum of $250,000 by the 2005-06 academic year, the Sonoma State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics came up with a unique plan.

In early November Ralph Leef of the Press Democrat, the local Sonoma County newspaper, did a story on the SSU's plan to create "Seawolf Stables" (the Seawolf is SSU's mascot).

According to the Press Democrat, "SSU supporters came up with the racehorse idea in an attempt to help SSU's athletic program meet a new NCAA requirement to increase its athletic scholarship fund or lose its Division II affiliation".

The two horses, Seawolf and Sonoma Slew, were selected by Tom Bachman, owner of Pegasus Ranch in Petaluma, California.

D-III Proposal Threatens D-I Future of 4 Hockey Schools

schools, proposals, athletics, scholarships, sports, institutions, hockey, NCAA, package, philosophy, D-III.
All of the following proposals passed unanimously, except the one that threatens the D-I hockey schools.

As part of a sweeping reform package, the Division III President's Council has recommended a proposal that would eliminate the ability for Division III schools that "play up" in one sport to award scholarships.

Schools in such a situation already face many restrictions imposed upon them by the Division I membership, including the inability to be represented on NCAA committees, and a restriction on the money earned from participation in NCAA tournaments.

The gist of the legislation has been the feeling that many schools were straying from the Division III philosophy.
