Racehorses come to the rescue of athletic scholarship fund 11/25/03
Athletics, Sonoma, athletic scholarship, horses, Sonoma Slew, Press

Faced with the daunting task of raising athletic scholarship funds to a minimum
of $250,000 by the 2005-06 academic year, the Sonoma State University Department
of Intercollegiate Athletics came up with a unique plan.
In early November
Ralph Leef of the Press Democrat, the local Sonoma County newspaper, did a story
on the SSU's plan to create "Seawolf Stables" (the Seawolf is SSU's
mascot).
According to the Press Democrat, "SSU supporters came up
with the racehorse idea in an attempt to help SSU's athletic program meet a new
NCAA requirement to increase its athletic scholarship fund or lose its Division
II affiliation".
The two horses, Seawolf and Sonoma Slew, were selected
by Tom Bachman, owner of Pegasus Ranch in Petaluma, California.

"The best advice I can pass along if
you plan to compete athletically at the college level is to start asking questions,"
said Dempsey.
Indeed, asking questions about athletic scholarships will
get you started in the right direction.
Only 0.3% make the starting rotation
at big Division I schools like Duke or UCLA.
Though Division III schools
don't give athletic scholarships at all, it's important to know that they sometimes
find other ways of helping student athletes financially.
For example,
if you already qualify for financial aid, the school is allowed to replace loan
money with grant money.

There
is always the chance that the financial aid award you are offered once you have
been accepted to a college will not be enough to cover all your costs, from tuition
to books to room and board.
The biggest scholarships usually go to athletes
in major sports such as football, basketball or baseball.
If you show
promise as a high school athlete, you may be eligible for an athletic scholarship.
In order to be considered you should be involved in either club sports or high
school team sports.
They are divided into different levels of competition;
NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, and NAIA.

Herman Wedemeyer was a man who left an extraordinary legacy in the realm of athletics,
acting, business, and politics.
In addition to the permanent exhibit recently
dedicated at McKeon Pavilion, future generations of St. Mary's students will benefit
from the establishment of the Herman Wedemeyer Endowed Athletic Scholarship Fund.
An endowed scholarship fund means that a large amount of principle is raised so
that the interest can generate scholarship funds forever.
If you would
like to give something back to Herman, and help Gael student-athletes get their
start in life, consider a donation to the Herman Wedemeyer Endowed Athletic Scholarship
Fund.
For major gifts, contact John Leykam in the St. Mary's Development
Office at (925) 631-4534.

believes that allowing athletic scholarships in Ontario would attract top athletes
like Tommy Dennison.
The call for full athletic scholarships at Queen's
has resurfaced, after the Canadian Interuniversity Sports Association released
a report Feb. 9.
Principal William Leggett told the University of Toronto
news service last year that the lack of full athletic scholarships in Ontario
makes a level playing field across Canada impossible.
Western Canada leads
the pack with $550 dollars of athletic scholarships available per registered student.
It was three years ago that the CIS ruled universities should have to disclose
all the money they allot to athletic scholarships.

don't hear athletes talking about this, well, you hear their parents.
Few people are actually asking the coaches, and most of what you hear is rumor

As a former scholarship track athlete at UCLA and someone
who had a personal interest in seeing my daughter acquire an athletic scholarship,
let me share with you what I have learned.
It is always surprising to
learn how little athletes and their parents may know about how good you have to
be to obtain a college athletic scholarship.
Obviously, every school has
its own standard; however, Purdue University provided a nice set of guidelines
(a few years back) for a top Division 1 school.

and College Prospects of America have teamed to offer educational Athletic Scholarship
and Recruiting workshops to student athletes and their parents free of charge.
As a service to the community, the workshops tackle everything regarding college
athletics, the many scholarship opportunities that exist for each sport, and the
practical things student athletes can do to increase their chances to compete
in college and land a scholarship or other significant financial aid.
By having more options, an athlete will be able choose a school based on their
criteria (location, major, reputation, playing time, etc) as opposed to accepting
an offer because there were no other offers to choose from.
