In 1950, only 10% of American homes had a television
and by 1960 the percentage had grown to 90%. Today 99% of
homes have a television. In fact, more families own a television
than a phone. (2) Children spend more time learning about
life through media than in any other manner. The average child
spends approximately 28 hours a week watching television,
which is twice as much time as they spend in school. The average
American child will witness over 200,000 acts of violence
on television including 16,000 murders before age 18. Potential
adverse effects of excessive exposure to media include: increased
violent behavior; obesity, decreased physical activity and
fitness, increased cholesterol levels and sodium intake; repetitive
strain injury (video computer games); insomnia; photic seizures;
impaired school performance; increased sexual activity and
use of tobacco and alcohol; decreased attention span; decreased
family communication; desensitization; excess consumer
Families are the bedrock of all societies. They can comprise
anywhere from a small group to scores of individuals, and range
from simple structures -- such as a married couple and one child
under one roof -- to intricately complex, multigenerational
combinations, living in one or more households. Invariably,
as a society evolves, so does the family structure. With the
modification of other factors -- for example, life expectancy,
or attitudes towards adoption -- the impact on the family is
telling. The traditional structure of the American family --
mother, father and children -- continues to prevail for the
most part as a new century unfolds. Yet, over the past several
decades, U.S. society has witnessed an evolution in family structure
and daily life in many respects, because of myriad factors,
running the gamut from advancements in science to the composition
of the workplace. Single parenthood, adoptive households, step-parenting,

DETROIT -- A conservative Christian group launched a
boycott against Ford Motor Co. Tuesday, saying the second-largest
U.S. automaker has given thousands of dollars to gay rights
groups, offers benefits to same-sex couples and actively recruits
gay employees. "From redefining family to include homosexual
marriage, to giving hundreds of thousands of dollars to support
homosexual groups and their agenda, to forcing managers to attend
diversity training on how to promote the acceptance of homosexualityFord
leads the way," American Family Association chairman Donald
Wildmon said in a statement. Ford responded that it respects
its customers and employees. "Ford values all people, regardless
of their race, religion, gender, sexual orientation and cultural
or physical differences," Ford vice president of human resources
Joe Laymon said. Tupelo, Miss.-based AFA said it e-mailed an
announcement about the Ford boycott to 2.2 million supporters.

BecauseIn many parts of the world a day is set side to
give thanks. The date and customs may vary from country to country
but the desire to take time to reflect on life's blessings remains
the same. In the United States, Thanksgiving is celebrated on
the fourth Thursday in November. It is a time for family, food,
and football, and marks the unofficial beginning to the winter
holiday season. I am thankful for Loraine and Billy Bear who
make such neat clipart -- like the icons I used on the graphic
menu buttons. Go and see! You'll find lots of great graphics.

Thanksgiving Day is an American traditonal holiday, falling
on the fourth Thursday in November. The first American Thanksgiving
was celebrated in 1621, to commemorate the harvest reaped by
the Plymouth Colony after a harsh winter. In that year Governor
William Bradford proclaimed a day of thanksgiving. A week in
advance, all of us were arranged for to observe Thanksgiving
Day in different American families. Every group would go to
an American family to celebrate Thanksgiving Day with members
of that family. I was lucky enough to go to our American teacher
Linda's home with Anna, who is from Liyuan High School and Tracey,
from Putuo District. On the morning of Thanksgiving Day, different
groups were picked up to different American families from our
motel. With the well-chosen gifts, we began to experience this
important American holiday. I was quite sure that we wanted
to learn more about American holidays and its culture by means
of experiencing this Thanksgiving.

Family, Spring 2004 Same-sex couple Drew Dionisio, left, and
Brandon Clark, both of Marblehead, MA are married at the Arlington
Street Church in Boston (May 20, 2004). In November of 2003,
the Massachusetts Supreme Court ruled that the state must issue
marriage licenses to same-sex couples. (Photo courtesy of Dan
Bersak.) Highlights of this Course We begin by considering briefly
the evolution of the family, its cross-cultural variability,
and its history in the West. We next examine how the family
is currently defined in the U.S., discussing different views
about what families should look like. We next look at sexuality,
traditional and non-traditional marriage, parenting, divorce,
family violence, family economics, poverty, and family policy.
Controversial issues dealt with include day care, welfare policy,
and the "Family Values" debate.

Home holds African-American history Nearly every day someone
asks Winstona Hackett Aldridge if she wants to sell her house.
The 87-year-old shakes her head and politely says, "No, no thank
you." For more than 50 years this has been home, a home so rich
in the foundation of African-American history in Arizona that
it is now eligible for city and national historic designation,
according to the city's African-American historic property survey.
