DETROIT (AP) -- A conservative Christian group launched
a boycott against Ford Motor Co. Tuesday, saying the second-largest
U.S. automaker has given thousands of dollars to gay rights
groups, offers benefits to same-sex couples and actively recruits
gay employees. "From redefining family to include homosexual
marriage, to giving hundreds of thousands of dollars to support
homosexual groups and their agenda, to forcing managers to attend
diversity training on how to promote the acceptance of homosexualityFord
leads the way," American Family Association chairman Donald
Wildmon said in a statement. Ford responded that it respects
its customers and employees. "Ford values all people, regardless
of their race, religion, gender, sexual orientation and cultural
or physical differences," Ford vice president of human resources
Joe Laymon said. Laymon added that other automakers -- including
General Motors Corp. and Chrysler Corp. -- provide benefits
for same-sex

Marriage wanes as American families enter new century,
University of Chicago research shows The American family, which
has undergone a major transformation in the past generation,
is poised to change even more in the coming century. Households
will move further away from the family-structure model of a
stay-at-home mother, working father, and children, according
to a new report from the National Opinion Research Center at
the University of Chicago. Because of divorce, cohabitation
and single parenthood, a majority of families rearing children
in the next century will probably not include the children's
original two parents, said Tom W. Smith, Director of the General
Social Survey and author of "The Emerging 21st-Century American
Family," which is being released Wednesday, Nov. 24. Those changes
are having an impact on how Americans think about family life,
although many traditional values continue to influence people's

always puts me in mind of a line from the ancient Greek playwright
Euripides. And if that is nutty, what shall we say about finding
ourselves engaged in discussing something called the family?
And in our lives as a national community we call conferences,
engage in public programs, create new organizations, and beyond
that publish and read several libraries of books devoted entirely
to questions about the family--not to speak of the fact that
here I am as well this evening, offering you some further conversation
on the subject. Where did the idea that the family might somehow
be an object of debate and choice come from? That photo was
not about the achievement of women's equality; it was about
the nuttiness--in this case, perhaps the proper word is madness--that
has overtaken all too many American families. Since the condition
of families depends to a considerable degree on the condition
of marriages, small wonder, then, that
